Injured Costa out for Bayern, Brazil
Bayern Munich's Douglas Costa is injured and will miss Sunday's key Bundesliga clash at Borussia Moenchengladbach and World Cup qualifiers for Brazil.
The 26-year-old will stay in Munich for treatment and sits out the league match in Gladbach with Bayern ten points clear of their rivals and on course for a fifth consecutive Bundesliga title.
The Selecao star, who injured his knee in training, will also miss Brazil's World Cup qualifiers against Uruguay, in Montevideo on Thursday, and Paraguay, in Sao Paulo on March 28.
Bayern are also missing Chile midfielder Arturo Vidal, who is suspended after picking up a fifth yellow card in last weekend's win over Eintracht Frankfurt.
Gladbach, who have so far picked up 15 points in 2017 under new coach Dieter Hecking, are also missing key midfielders Fabian Johnson and Christoph Kramer.
US international winger Johnson has a thigh injury, Germany defensive midfielder Kramer has a knee problem, while Mahmoud Dahoud (thigh) and captain Lars Stindl (hip) are doubtful.
The injuries mean Hecking can not rotate following Thursday's 2-2 draw with Schalke which saw Borussia crash out of the Europa League's Last 16 on away goals.
"The injuries follow us, unfortunately, which means we can't rotate as much as we want to," said Hecking.
Nevertheless, Hecking says this is a chance for his players to measure themselves against star-studded Bayern and bounce back from their Europa League exit and last weekend's shock 2-1 league defeat to strugglers Hamburg.
"Everyone looks forward to this game, because you get to go up against some of the best players in Europe," said Hecking.
"I don’t need to stress that we will be outsiders.
"In past seasons, Gladbach has been an awkward game for Bayern and we want to be that again on Sunday, irrespective of how our squad looks.
"We will obviously need a little bit of luck, something that has been missing from our last two games."
"If you just try and sit back against Bayern, it will never end well.
"There will be times when even Bayern will give you time and space, but they have so much individual quality that can turn a game in their direction.
"There is no other team like them in the Bundesliga.
"You can have an outstanding day against them – and still lose."
